David Toop

David Toop is one of the most widely read and influential writers on the subject of sound and the art of listening. His latest book Into the Maelstrom: Music, Improvisation and the Dream of Freedom: Before 1970 is a must read for anyone who is drawn to improvisation – ranging from surrealist automatism and stream-of-consciousness in literature, to the music of Percy Grainger and the free improvising groups emerging out of the early 1960s, it sheds a whole new light on an often overlooked art form.

For his Fort Process appearance Toop will be drawing on this area of research, but – staying to true to his subject matter – he is eschewing conventional formats such as a straight-forward talk or discussion. What form it will take is currently unknown, but we can say that it will definitely involve some very interesting collaborators and some very deep listening!
